THE DIVINE DELETE KEY
The blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
Maybe some of you still remember the mimeograph. You would cut a stencil with your typewriter. After the stencil was cut, you would put it on the mimeograph, the ink would come out of the machine, and flow through the stencil onto the paper. We used one when I first began in the ministry. We still have our old one in the Education Building. If you made a mistake, you would have to put some fluid on the stencil which would dry, and then you would have to type it again. As you can imagine, it was a very messy process that would even test the patience of Job. It was a great improvement when copy machines came along. You just had to type on a piece of paper, put that on the copy machine, and just like magic you could make copies. But let’s face it – we would still make mistakes, so we’d reach for the bottle of “white out,” brush it on our mistakes, and then type over them. Next came the erasing ribbon that lifted the type from the page so we could make our corrections more easily. Now we have the computer with its delete key. You just highlight the word or words and press the delete button and it’s gone. How far we’ve come!
Sin is not just some “typo” on the page of life that we can correct. Each thought, word, and deed that goes astray offends God and earns us death. We can’t put some fluid on and type over it. You don’t get a do-over. Whiting sin out in our memories won’t work. Regardless what we try, the print remains to trouble us. Guilt is still there. Typing over sin with our own works won’t do it either. Those efforts only smudge our sins, leaving them clearly visible to the divine judge. Even if we had some delete key for our sins, they’d still be in the computer trash file, damning us before our God.
There’s only one way for sin to be erased. In fact, it’s already been done. At Calvary, when his Son said, “It is finished,” God hit the delete key on his heavenly computer. “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.” Isaiah 43:25. His Son’s precious blood paid for every sin of every sinner. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18 The sins were totally erased, not just typed over or transmitted to some trash file. When God looks at me, he sees a clean page because of his Son’s blood.
Unbelievers will go to hell, not because Jesus’ blood didn’t cover them, but because they rejected its payment. They didn’t want to cover up the sin. They didn’t want to use the delete type. They thought that they were good enough to stand before God in their own righteousness. They thought that a loving God would simply ignore everyone’s sins.
Place your faith in Jesus as the only one who can cover up your sins. Place your faith in Jesus who has removed your sins. “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12
